So close to heaven, Erfurt Art Museum

From March 29 to July 26, the Angermuseum Erfurt presents the exhibition “So Close to Heaven: Clouds in Art”.

Viewing clouds is part of our everyday experience, yet as multifaceted, constantly changing phenomena, clouds always remain something special and fascinating. The major summer exhibition at the Angermuseum is dedicated to the motif of clouds in art, bringing works from various eras into dialogue with contemporary art. The meaning of cloud paintings ranges from the religious symbolism of the Middle Ages to the sublime, atmospheric landscapes of Romanticism and the scientifically influenced perspectives of Realism. In contemporary art, clouds are increasingly linked to political themes such as climate change, or used as a means of poetically transforming everyday objects.

The exhibition brings together works spanning over 500 years and includes around 30 international artists, from Albrecht Dürer to Yoko Ono. Through their art, they all make one thing clear: our relationship to the sky and its phenomena is always also of profound emotional and existential significance
